Listing lists
I use Firefox. I am, in fact, a Firefox evangalist and will bend the ear of anyone willing to listen about the overall greatness of my browser of choice. One of the thinks that makes FF so great are extensions - little bits of code that can change the way web pages work or lok, or give you information, or just make browsing safer and easier. The following is a list of the extensions I use.
- Removing Annoyances
- AdBlock Plus - Like Internet Explorer, Firefox blocks popups, but what about the ads in pages? This is the solution.
- Add-Art - Add-Art works with AdBlock to replace ads with art. How is this not the coolest thing? The art rotates every two weeks.
- FlashBlock - I cannot sing the praises of FlashBlock enough. It keeps those annoying ads that cover what you're trying to read at bay, by replacing them with a clickable object - you can activate the Flash if you wnat to. You can also set the exclusion list up so that YouTube and Hulu play automatically.
- Bookmark Wrangling
- Foxmarks doesn't so much as wrangle your book marks as back them up and keep the accessible on multiple computers - if you use more than one computer, it can also synch bokmarks across them, so if you find a great site on one and bookmark it there, it will show up on your other bookmark lists.
- Fast Dial - One of the great joys of Firefox is tabbed browsing (FF had it long before Internet Explorer) Fast Dial adds a panel of bookmarks to new tabs, and shows snapshots of the pages. this makes it easy to check for updates to your favorite sites.
- Tark - sets a time limit on bookmarks. This makes it easy to mark things to read in the next few weeks, since you'll know how long ago you bookmarked them.
- Information Overload
- One-Click Weather puts local weather conditions and forecasts on your status bar, along with severe weather warnings. It also allows you to see regional radar without opening a new window or tab.
- Fox Clocks - Turn your status bar into a world clock. I don't keep the Windows Taskbar on top of my open windows, so this is an easy replacement clock.
- Can't Live Without
- Zotero - an amazing research tool with one major plus in my eyes: It formats citations.
- Greasemonkey - This is actually an extension that allows you to run little scripts that change the appearance or functionality of a web page. I use this mostly in a browser-based game called Kingdom of Loathing, to make things like navigation and seling items easier.
I read lots of blogs. A partial list:
- Fun
- Jezebel - like the title says: "Celebrity. Sex. Fashion. Without Airbrushing."
- The Daily Coyote - Shreve Stockton adopted a coyote pup when he was ten days old. This blog records her journey with Charlie. Amazing pictures!
